12% Loud, 50% Strong?

Greeks make up 12% of the Cal community but 50% of the ASUC Senate. This includes the multicultural sorority, Phi Nu Xi, and all of the IFC and Panhellenic Council. Is this another interest group that has any significant sway in legislation? Remember the Greek Philanthropy Fund, which got $10,000, exactly what it requested in the 2005-2006 Budget. Remember, I am criticizing this as an active member of the Greek communtiy, but we demand to know the special interest ties. The following is a list of Senators and Executives who are members of the Greek community.

60% Loud: ASUC Executive Officers
President Manuel Buenrostro: Phi Delta Theta
EVP Anil Daryani: Delta Chi
AAVP Jason Dixson: Kappa Delta Rho

50% Loud: ASUC Senate
1) Oren Gabriel – Delta Chi
2) Igor Tregub – Alpha Epsilon Pi
3) Edward Lam - Pi Alpha Phi
4) Chris Abad - Sigma Nu
5) Vishal K Gupta – Sigma Phi Epsilon
6) Ben Narodick – Alpha Epsilon Pi
7) Ernie Macias - Acacia
8) Sapna Mehta – Phi Nu Xi
9) Ashley Thomas – Kappa Alpha Theta
10)Lisa Putkey – Alpha Omicron Pi

Execs: 60% loud. You're forgetting the SAO.

Also, for the record...

Thomas is a pledge for Theta, not a member yet, and Phi Nu Xi is a multicultural house, and isn't what is normally considered part of the traditional Greek community. Additionally, I don't think Sepna is the only member of that house.

And, Greeks and Dorms have traditionally been powerful voting blocks because it is easier to mobilize the base. If more people voted, then the groups would be cancelled out. It's like young people in the US complaining they have no representation, and then don't vote.

Finally, many Greek senators represent other interests primarily, including engineering (Chris & Igor), handicapped students (Ernie), publications (Ben), and environmental issues (Lisa).

Does Ashley Thomas being a pledge of Kappa Alpha Theta make her any less supportive of the Greek community? Also, Phi Nu Xi as a multicultural sorority greatly benefits from the Greek Philanthropy Fund, somthing heavily lobbied for and granted based on the fact that the Greeks dominate student politics.

Yes, senators have other interests but when it comes for lobbying for Greek issues and being a special interest group, 50% of the senate and 60% of the executive offices being Greeks will trump any other organization on campus.

While we're at it, can we say Greeks are overrepresented in Congress, and the Fortune 500, and we should re-distribute those too?

Hey one at a time here. If we start with the ASUC and disply its problems and overthrow it, maybe we can also create change elsewhere. But first we have to abolish the ASUC.

Then we can abolish Congress and capitalism, right dti? HAHA what a joke.

I never said abolish capitalism and congress. I said we can abolish the ASUC and seek to implement change elsewhere. Jesus.

The greeks are also overrepresented among the ranks of college-aged date rapists.

That's right. Perhaps we should be worried that half the senate and 60% of the executives are among this overrepresented statistic, not that they ARE rapists. Nevertheless, it's an interest group.

I know I've been raped by a sorority girl before
