Some points on your top 4 "scandals":
1) The 54 Campaign was a Graduate Assembly decision, not the ASUC. Additionally, none of that money was ever spent from ASUC coffers due to internal checks on the system.
2) So Primm got arrested. Who cares? It didn't cost students any money, and that seems to be your biggest peeve.
3) As you have heard in other comment strings, more was at stake here than $15k. Even then, courts could've made us pay much more than that if BAMN got an activist/stupid judge.
4) First, the number was closer to $6k, not $30k. Secondly, all students got their money back from that affair, and the loss was paid out of commercial revenue, which goes to pay mostly for capital improvements and long-term investment, not student groups.
Beware of getting caught up in hype.
1) Where does the Graduate Assembly get their money from... the ASUC?
2) Primm's arrest cost us our dignity. that's something money can't buy back.
3) So the point is any weird activist group can now sue the ASUC and get their attorney fees paid for? This is outrageous. They didn't even have a valid case. Next we're going to be paying Zack Lieberman's attorney fees.

Yes, and that money could have gone where else besides paying off negligence?
By the way thanks for being the first ASUC official to comment.
1) Short answer: no. Long answer: yes and no. The GA gets their funding through the fee structure of the ASUC, but is a mostly autonomous government.
2) No one still cares about Primm's arrest. You may be one of a hundred people on campus that still remembers that incident. It wasn't a smart decision, but it certainly did not spell the downfall of the integrity of the ASUC.
3) It was a risk management decision. The Senate acted on the advice of its legal counsel and advisors.
4) Yes, the $6k from the bookstore could've gone to improving the student offices that are provided by the ASUC in Eshleman Hall. It was an unfortunate mistake, but given the scope of the ASUC's operations, did not greatly affect operations.
And for the record, I'm not answering these as an ASUC official, but simply to demonstrate that the ASUC is like a galbladder. It does more good than can be conspicuously gathered, you generally don't hear anything about it unless it is bad, and if it was gone, you'd certainly feel the difference.
Ben, you're absolutely right, if the ASUC were gone, we'd certainly feel the difference. In a very positive way. What bad could possibly come from abolishing the ASUC... we don't get an overpriced bookstore anymore?
Considering I almost started a student group and the senators were laughing that I would get $100 at most to start my group, I think $6,000 would have done a good deal to help a group I was going to start (and no, it wasn't an anti-ASUC group). This money could have also gone to fund a group that never gets its fair share of funding.
As for #3, if I sued the ASUC, would I get $15,000 too? I think what you're saying is that the ASUC was being bullied around by the deep pockets of BAMN and you guys were too meek to fight them. The ASUC is essentially in the pockets of special interests when the need comes, which I think the DAAP incident shows vibrantly.
Can you explain some of the crimes of the ASUC for new people (freshmen like me) like the yearlong vacancy of Heller Lounge, etc, in simpler terms so we can understand?

also, why is the student store selling Nike material? if it's because of the ASUC, i say down with the ASUC. but if it's because of a university agreement w/ nike, then we need to complain, protest, etc to not SELL OUR SOULS to this capitalist corporation that uses unjust slave labor.

Basically Heller Lounge used to be a great place where students could sleep, eat, hang out on couches, etc. In 2003, the ASUC signed a deal with the University to build a "multicultural center" inside of Heller Lounge. The ASUC was already in debt because of that incompetent ASUC administration; the University twisted their balls and forgave their debt if they sold out the one student space on campus to build this multicultural center. The ASUC, who could have refused quickly signed away our student space to appease the University.
They took years to "build" this multicultural center. It reopened in 2005. It esstentially looks exactly the same as Heller Lounge, and our "student space" was located to the 7th floor of Eshleman Hall (VERY inconvenient) where it was a study-only lounge.
Multicultural center or not, why did they take so long to "build" this center? It looks worse than when they started. The only thing multicultural about it are some ethnic magazines and the smart ass. They plan to finish the multicultural center in a little bit, but I highly doubt this. If you track ASUC promises you'll find very little that they've come through.
About NIKE and the bookstore, it's very simple. The ASUC has a contract with efollet, and efollet sells textbooks, nike stuff, clothing (all WAY overpriced). I'm not by any means a capitalist hater but yes, the ASUC signed this deal and the University didn't really do anything for or against it to that effect.

With regards to the no on 54 campaign, the final ruling was that the External office did not, in fact, violate the campaign rules. It was spun as such in the light of the upcoming elections, but to report it inaccurately, DTI, is to buy into the spin of yet another rival ASUC party, something which I'm sure you're morally against. PS, using the Daily Cal as a source is questionable at best. Tsk tsk.
No, not a rival ASUC party. In fact, SA was almost completely silent on the issue. The Daily Cal/Calstuff led the charge on that issue.
The bottom line is, the 54 issue as well as the Primm issues are simply the tip of an ignorant and incompetant iceberg called the ASUC. And if things dont warm up soon, this iceberg will sink the ship called "The will of the STUDENTS" down to the bottom of the ocean of idiocy.
