Sucking in the Freshmen, Spitting out Corruption
According to Ben Narodick, the ASUC is currently trying to suck in more free labor (i.e. Freshmen who don't know what the ASUC is) from the student body with the Judicial Council, Elections Council Chair, and Greek Affairs Officer open.
Elections council chair: The elections council was given tens of thousands of dollars in the 2005-2006 budget, and every year they screw up the elections process or take up to two months to deliver election results.
Judicial Council: If anyone can remember Amaris White, she lied about her qualifications when confirmed as the latest Judicial Council member. Most of the senators who voted to have her confirmed KNEW she was lying and still appointed her to this position.
Greek Affairs Officer: This should be the smoking gun to prove that the Greeks are an interest group that is heavily influential upon ASUC decisions. It's no wonder that a majority of the ASUC has strong Greek ties.

Just FYI, elections results take so long to come out because of countless injunctions and other random bullshit that the candidates themselves create. The tens of thousands of dollars went to rent out a hundred laptops that were put up around campus. They also had to rent a lot of communications equipment to handle incidents and other random crap.
A lot of last spring's election people spent essentially 3 days and 2 nights on campus, going home to take care of the basics/shower. They did a fantastic job. It's the system they're forced to operate in that sucks.
That's exactly right, the system is what's wrong with the ASUC. Why should students be forced to work with a pathetic system that only sets them up for failure? It's time to take a stance against a terrible system that has expensive electronic voting but only yields results after "lawsuits". What a waste of student money.
FYI DTI, few senators knew Amaris was lying at the time she was approved. When she failed to be honest, Senator Narodick tried to inform the senate via a point of information. Chair Lee refused to recognize him, and Amaris got away with her lies. Some senators, Bloom in particular, may have known but did not care. Most of the senate was outraged after they found out.
Bottom line: This is not the Daily Cal - if you're going to report info to the students, be accurate. I know you're on your mission, but have some integrity in the process.
About the Greek Affairs Officer: Greeks are a special interest group. So are co-opers. So are a plethora of other groups that have ASUC representatives to them. Look at the senate agenda. There are lots of groups that get special treatment, officers to represent them, or are otherwise large enough parts of the campus to warrant the attention.

It looks like Chair Lee has done some damage already. In fact, it looks like Chair Lee has actually done more damage than good, it is speculated. Someone should do an article on her ascention to power in the ASUC. I'm sure there's gotta be some good stories. Cameron? Ed? Hovannes?
Uh, anonymous, Chair Lee was the EVP last year. What are you talking about?
Ed, you're wasting your time here - the only cause more hopeless than abolishing the ASUC is getting the abolish the ASUC people to get their facts right. Just tune them out and try to be entertained.
